With the Mentor Awards nomination date deadline fast approaching just before the Easter weekend break, a flurry of nominations was received. Chefs remembering colleagues that had coached, trained and supported them in their early career were nominating their mentors to be recognised by their peers across our great industry.
There were simply too many to process at one stage, so some work was done over the Easter weekend to get nomination forms out to all.
There were also many requests for the deadline to be extended and as such, it has. The new deadline date for nominations to be received by is April 30th, 2018.
There were also many requests for a college Chef Mentor category to be added to the awards, and again it has been.
Many emails were also received supporting and endorsing the awards that will celebrate and recognise chefs that have helped and developed others throughout their career.
Murray Chapman, MCGB MasterCGC was succinct in his praise:
“The Mentor Awards are a fantastic opportunity for you to thank the chef who mentored and inspired you to believe in yourself and achieve.”
The most popular category so far is Chef Mentor Rising Star, showing that young chefs are following the example of what they have been shown. Doubtless, exactly what their mentor’s would have wished for.
The first-ever dedicated ‘Mentor Awards’ for UK Chefs will be held on the first evening of the H&C EXPO event at the Celtic Manor Resort in July.
The Mentor Awards, now spanning eleven categories, have been launched to recognise individuals who have helped to train, nurture and develop Chefs across the UK hospitality and catering industry.
The Mentor Awards categories are:
- Best Restaurant Chef Mentor
- Best Hotel Chef Mentor
- Best Contract Catering Chef Mentor
- Best Pub & Bar Chef Mentor
- Best School Chef Mentor
- Best College Chef Mentor
- Best University Chef Mentor
- Best Care Home Chef Mentor
- Best Healthcare Chef Mentor
- Chef Mentor Rising Star
Plus – The Peter Hazzard award for outstanding achievement – This is the final award of the evening and will be presented to the Chef the judges feel has followed in Peter’s footsteps.
Chair of the Judging panel, Cyrus Todiwala OBE explained:
“The late Peter Hazzard dedicated much of his life to the development of Chefs so, it is fitting that an awards event remembers what he did.
We look forward to welcoming the Hazzard family and many of their friends attending on the night. The Mentor Awards will bring Chefs from across our industry together to celebrate unsung heroes, as well as those who have previously enjoyed many a song. It will be a very special occasion.”
