Health insurance is of the highest priority in today’s day and age. It helps you in getting the required medical assistance, along with much needed financial support. A standard health insurance plan covers common ailments. In the past few years, there has been more awareness of children with special needs. One such developmental disorder which is more prevalent is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or also commonly referred to as autism.
Children who have autism have problems in developing social and communication skills. It is more deeply related to physical, abnormal, biological and chemical activity in the brain. More prominently, these children lack in non-verbal communication, social interactions and the like. Furthermore, the symptoms of autism vary among each person.
As per reports by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, about 1 out of 68 children are diagnosed with Autism. That is an alarming number, and a health insurance plan needs to be opted to ensure the right treatment is available without any financial difficulty.
If you are a parent of an autistic child, you might be concerned regarding your child’s future and adult life. At the moment, there are very few health insurance policies that cover expenses related to autism. You might be worried about the costs of the treatment modalities and the therapy that the child may require. Autism care requires a multi-dimensional treatment approach wherein the child might need a counsellor, a speech therapist, a special educator and more, which might prove to be much expensive. About 30% of children in the autism spectrum meet the criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which sometimes makes them predisposed to injury. This might add on to the costs.
However, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has set up a National Trust under which Nirmaya health insurance is available to cover the treatment-related costs. This insurance plan is available at an affordable premium of ₹ 250 for the people below the poverty line. While the same is available at ₹ 500 for general masses. The sum assured amount under such an insurance plan is capped at ₹ 1 lakh. The scheme covers out-patient costs, hospitalizations along with therapies and alternative medications. All these treatments are necessary in case of a developmental disorder like autism.
Although the initiative by the government is noteworthy, the true cost of therapy and other treatment is far more. Along with that, any other ailments that might occur is not covered. At such times, a private insurance company can help you. You can either opt for a specified insurance plan that includes developmental disorders or add them to your existing family health insurance. Ensuring you have adequate coverage for your child is crucial. So both, a specific insurance plan and a family health cover, together will offer complete financial protection to treat autism and other health conditions.
Children with ASD are sensitive and need special care. It is always better to have health insurance to cover the costs of treatment so that your child can get the utmost care and treatment that he/she requires. It is also advisable to invest in plans that would simplify the process even further with facilities such as cashless health insurance. Consider the needs of your child and cover them adequately to live a fruitful and healthy life.
